Q) An electric pole is 10 m high. A steel wire tied to top of the pole is affixed at a point on the ground to keep the pole upright. If the wire makes an angle of 45° with the horizontal through the foot of the pole, find the length of the wire. [Use √2 = 1.414]

Ans:

Let’s make a diagram for the given condition: An electric pole is 10 m high. A steel wire tied to top of the pole is affixed

Let the length of the wire be L.

\sin \theta = \frac{perpendicular}{hypotenuse}

\sin 45^\circ &= \frac{10}{L}

\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} &= \frac{10}{L}

∴ L = 10 x √2

∴ L = 10 x 1.414 = 14.14 m

Therefore, the length of wire is 14.14 m
