(Q) Rohan’s mother is 26 years older than him. The product of their ages (in years) 3 years from now will be 360. We would like to find the Rohan’s present age.

Ans:  Let’s Rohan’s age be x km /h

Hence, his mother’s age is (x + 26)

3 years later, Rohan’s age will be: (x + 3) and his mother’s age will be (x + 29)

By given condition, product of their ages after 3 years is 360

\Rightarrow (x + 3)(x + 29) = 360

\Rightarrow x^2 + 3 x + 29 x + 87 = 360

\Rightarrow x^2 + 32 x + 87 - 360 = 0

\Rightarrow x^2 + 32 x - 273 = 0

\Rightarrow x^2 + 32 x - 273 = 0

\Rightarrow x^2 + 39 x - 7 x - 273 = 0

\Rightarrow x(x + 39) - 7 (x + 39) = 0

\Rightarrow (x - 7) (x + 39) = 0

\Rightarrow x = 7 ~ and ~ x = - 39

Here, we reject x = – 39 because the value of age can not be a negative number.

Hence, Rohan’s age is 7 yrs.

Check:

If Rohan’s age is 7 yrs, his mother’s age is 33 yrs.

After 3 yrs, their  ages will 10 yrs and 36 yrs.

Product of their ages = 10 × 36 = 360

Since it meets the given condition, hence our answer is correct.
